Fieldwork

Another key part of the coursework is why the impact of fieldwork taken into Belfast, first off unfortunaltely Millie did not want to take us to Belfast and heres a comprehensive list of reasons why.

1) We did not have enough time to organise a trip to Belfast we recieved the information in November?
2) The risk assessment came back and said odds are Cryss And Tristan wouldnt survive the trip and although Millie has always wanted to be on the cover of the Taunton magazine, she wasn't willing to lose her job.

On a literal note a risk assessment would identify as high risk for students.
3) Belfast isn't an exactly safe area check BBC News students walking around doing fieldwork and asking questionaires may not get answers they are looking for.
4) Pricing, trips are expensive those without money cannot afford trips hence they do not go onto trips.
5) Staffing - Millie doesn't want to go, the class doesn't want to do can you think of anyone seriously willing to be another teacher on the list of those who didn't make it back from Belfast.

So what does that mean we can do, it means in regards to fieldwork we have to use what we have got and thats easy enough theirs loads of information on the internet about the wards in Belfast ive posted a little up here and theirs even more in the AIB. So what about Primary data you may ask we can take primary data using Geographic Information Systems Or GIS or Google Earth. Using these we can perform Environmental Quality Assessments online these are a much safer cheaper and quicker alternative than taking a trip to Belfast.

So how would we go about picking sites for the EQA well we need a sampling strategy. 4 Types
Pragmatic - Pick where it makes sence to pick, AKA where we have data for
Good Points
Provides data for the area so we know we have it
Avoid sites that are out of bounds of reaching

Bad Points
Can include bias

Random - Completely Random
Good Points
Removes Bias (Intentional)
Easy Enough To Work Out

Bad Points
May Lack Data
Can Be In Backgardens Oceans Etc

Systematic - Machine like as in I will sample every 11.22654567 cm in yards x 11.5
Good Points
Gives a good spread of an area
Removes intentional bias

Bad Points
May include areas that cannot be accessed.

Stratified - Divides the areas up into sections and you take a certain number of results from each section
Good Points
Represents an area well

Bad Points
Can have areas where results can be difficult to obtain

And you can also have a mix and match although it might be difficult to take a systematically random approach.

Good examples are a pragmatic stratified sample as it allows a fair representation of the city while allowing you to pick the areas that apply to your GIS system of choice.

What to do with the data, well from a starting point our EQA's can be compared with the other students and I know we all have different opinions in regards to housing coming from Essex I am probably more lenient to everything else. By combining results it does mean that you can an even representation of how varying people view these houses the other idea may be to have a very specific EQA

Heres and example in regards to Murals

1 - Best
Clean Murals, good messages that have not been vandalised or damaged. Shows the best of Belfast history

5 - Worst
Murals that encourage divides in the community or have messages that are not appropriate for others. Shows the worst of belfasts history

Remember the more in depth you are in the exam the more they will like it to an extent please no.

Any mural that has colours that may offend as well as a derogatory message and slandering and..... (11 and a half pages later) .... no pictures of scooby doo I hate him. The end oh I forgot........

What to do with the results
Kinda feeling a bit mellow anyway from the top take your results you can compare them against the results of others or secondary sources. Think the SOA's, you can also use iser lines to seperate the area into the best of the EQA and if your feeling really smart you can use your GIS system to create a bar charts that reach for the sky or in the case of duncairn maybe not haha.

Well I did go all out with some of the best bits of this weeks geography so lets have another story mayhaps. Ive gotta admit sometimes our parents just do your nut in, my mum probably never believed in me she must have been a Daily Mail reader because she was convinced that I was going off the rails at every oppertunity. Cryss your not doing drugs are you, No Mum, your not in a gang are you, no mum, your not going to go out and do in the real world what you do in those video games. Yes mum in a drug addicated, murderer in a gang...... Really? NO!!!!

Anyway sometimes we come up with some rubbish excuses im sure Millie has had her fair share of lame excuses its not often our parents come up with the same idea. My mum on the other hand was horrid in regards to making good excuses, so heres a little backstory. It was around 3am in the morning, I was home from Kent for the holidays, my mum had woken up and come downstairs. She started arguing with me about going to bed. As always a firm believer in the im awake your awake, im asleep your asleep movement she believed that I should be in bed. Being the royal pain in the ass I be I asked her why I should be in bed and she simply replied because I can't sleep knowing your not asleep. This horrible excuse led me to two conclusions, first off what the hell was she doing in between the 4 hours it took for her to realise I was still awake and secondly what did she do when I went back to Kent / Somerset. Its 4am in the morning she sits up looking at the moon through the window. A single tear streams down her face and in a wimpery voice she whispers. I.... just.... hope.... hes getting.... a good nights sleep.

Anyway hope that made a few people laugh. xD
